Making Montessori Inspired Handcrafted Wooden Reading Spinners
I am making 4 sets of handcrafted reading spinners today. These Montessori style reading spinners have been very popular, and now are not near as time consuming to make since Shane got me templates to paint the letters with.
We start by carefully measuring the raw wood then run the wood through a table saw. Shane then goes on to sand each individual face on each block before drilling the on the drill press.
The solid wood blocks are then given to me to sand the edges and corners, making sure that they are rounded over nicely. After they are sanded, the paint and gloss is applied.
Each set still takes a couple of hours to make, but it is nowhere near how long it took me to design each individual spinner to make sure all words are real words. About 20-30 hours of design development went into each Montessori style reading spinner, approx 100 hours in total for each set.
Each set is a labour of love, but they are kind of fun to make.
