Why this spinner set is so awesome!

These special reading blocks help young readers learn to recognize and read their first words. Your child will enjoy turning the blocks to reveal new letters and words. Watch your child's self confidence grow as he/she learns to sound each letter out phonetically and recite rhyming words as well as recognize some familiar words they use in every day language.

This spinner has been designed so that with every turn of a red letter, there is a new, real word that is revealed. Some words are well known, and other words are little known but each is found in the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, the standard dictionary used in Canadian and American classrooms.

{What makes this set so special}

• creates 80 real words found in classic dictionaries
• enables your child focus to focus on learning words one vowel at a time, which makes reading a lot easier

History of our Reading Spinners

Reading spinners are an original toy designed by Miriam, owner of MDH Toys, developed reading spinners because once her son (who has autism as was nonverbal until just after age 5) needed a hands on tactile way of learning to read. Due to his constant need of fidgeting with some sort of object whether it be turning something or bending something, Miriam came up with spinner blocks that he could twirl while reading. Focusing on one spinner at a time, Miriam would spend hours on the back yard swing with her son, getting him first to learn the letters on the reading spinner and then sounding the letters out, and finally forming and sounding out words. Because this method of learning worked so well with her son she started making and supplying more first to other special needs families in the immediate community they lived in and then creating an online shop to sell them in.

Our Materials and Process

 The MDH Toys Reading Spinner  is meticulously crafted out of locally sourced pine/spruce/fir that is harvested with sustainable practices. After being cut in a local woodworking shop, they are sanded twice. Once with a belt sander and a second time by hand ensuring that they have smooth rounded edges free of splinters. They are then painted with certified non-toxic water based paint and finished in enough coats of certified non-toxic gloss to ensure that they are water resistant.
